It had been a long time since I spent a weekend with just the girls. About a year and half ago, I jetted off to Chicago for a few days for a reunion with my lovely, and much missed girlfriends from Holland. (Well, they aren't really from Holland, we just met there when we were all broads living abroad.) Earlier this month, I hit the road headed for a girl's weekend in Galveston. Those of you who have read my previous blogs know that I am a "Married Female Seeking Same", therefore, you might remember I had been invited to the 40th birthday celebration of a new friend. The Galveston weekend was, in fact, the setting for the festivities.
Our girl's getaway was filled with all the expected activities you might expect for a bunch of women without hubbies or kids in tow --- shopping, girl talk, spa visit, girl talk, eating, girl talk, eating, girl talk, and more girl talk. Of course, there was the occasional surprising revelation as the group of friends shared stories from the past, but, it was so much more than some juicy fodder. Away from all the things that demand our time and attention back home, I was able to see these women in a different light. They transcended any labels I had put on them based solely on our interactions prior to our weekend away. There's the woman I had always thought of as very poised and reserved acting like a nut dancing around the room, the one who I had put on a pedestal of sorts for both her strong faith and seemingly perfect life revealed a more human side that made her all the more endearing to me, the gal with the quick wit and open heart showed me a vulnerability I hadn't notice before, and the intellectual, elegant one revealed a fun-loving, silly side of her personality that still brings a little smile to my face when I think back to our weekend. As for what they learned about me. . .well, I don't know exactly. But, I do know this -- I am pretty sure they like me. They really like me! And, I am just smitten with them!
